Sandro Cafferata
IT Executive
Strategic Consultant to IT Management
Sandro Cafferata has more than 22 years of leadership experience managing IT organizations. An accomplished manager, with broad IT knowledge, his vision and expertise in building and mentoring IT Engineering and Support groups have driven notable improvement in availability and performance of mission critical Systems.
For the past 2 years, Sandro has worked as a Consultant with Fortune 100 IT organizations to improve operational reliability, consolidate datacenters and implement out-of-region disaster recovery. Previously, Sandro managed Infrastructure Engineering teams at MassMutual Financial Group. This was an organization of 80 technologists, with a budget of over $17M. Sandro focused in nurturing a culture of Reliability, Availability, Serviceability and Performance (RASP) across all the Infrastructure Engineering teams, in the design, building and supporting critical Enterprise Systems, including Internet portals and e-mail. This led to improved availability of the Enterprise Internet Platform and Applications, from 99.5% to 99.95%, and Email from 99.8% to 99.99% in less than one year. Previously, Sandro led a small team of Senior Architects, responsible for planning and designing the IT Infrastructure. He introduced GRID computing in the Investment Unit, replacing a large SUN-based computer, doubling the performance for half the cost. This was a huge success for the Client organization.
Sandro also had significant impact on the Y2K readiness at Travelers Life and Annuity, leading the IT Technical Support Teams which upgraded the HW and SW Infrastructure, from mainframe, to servers and personal computers.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Sandro held several IT Management positions at Aetna Life and Casualty, where he advanced from Application Programmer, to Systems Programmer, to first line Supervisor and Middle management. Sandro started his IT career in 1974 as a Computer Operator and eventually as a Programmer.
Sandro graduated from the Italian Merchant Marine Academy and attended OCS before serving in the Italian Navy as an Ensign and Lieutenant (JG). Before moving to the US, Sandro was the Officer Navigator on Cruise Ships.
